this is in centralia, pa. it was a coal mining town for many years. in 1961 the mines caught fire and numerous attempts to put them out failed. 44 years later, the town is a ghost town (i think twelve houses remain occupied) and huge tracts of land have been reduced to smouldering scorched earth. veins of coal run everywhere for miles, and the fire is still very much alive and spreading.
Geez Matt, this is almost better than the following one! In a way it's less obvious, hence more powerful.
